What to buy?
For the gamers:
First of all, what console do they have? Or are they a PC gamer? I’m only going to look at PC, PS3 and Xbox360 since I don’t have a lot of personal experience with the Wii (so sue me!). Also, the last-gen consoles are literally gathering dust so I haven’t looked at anything new for those! Oh yeah, let’s also consider the PSP and PSPGo! Again, I’m going to snub the DS/DSi because I just haven’t played with those enough to give you an informed opinion.
For my first installment, let’s look at the PS3… I think some must-have games are:
The remastered God of War collection – games I and II that have been remasted in HD from the previous PS2 versions. As good as the originals in terms of gameplay, violence, and just sheer awesomeness – but now with more awesome! I had held off on getting the PS2 versions to play on the PS3, and I’m sure glad I did!

Another good choice and a great reference game to show/awe friends and family is Uncharted 2. Taking everything that worked in the first one and just making it better is something that doesn’t happen in many sequels. Uncharted 2 is really an epic adventure that has just that right dramatic, “movie-like” feel. Maybe Tomb Raider will learn a thing or 3 from this series.
The original Uncharted is still a great game for those who haven’t played it and it’s a bargain now, too! Definitely worth checking out Gamestop’s supply if you’re not against buying used!

Does the gamer you’re shopping for love a challenge and RPGs? If so, Demon’s Souls is one unforgiving ride. It’s a unique take on an RPG that allows some interaction with others online, but mostly it’s just a TOUGH RPG that you can’t just coast through with some button-mashing. If that special one you’re shopping for has ever thrown a controller in frustration, this MAY not be the game for them! |
Sports fans? Not going to say too much about them, because there are just a few solid choices… it’s almost a given that the EA sports franchises will be solid and refreshed every year. This doesn’t mean that they’re bad – not at all!
Is your gamer a car fan? Better yet, car addict? If so, Gran Turismo 5 will sure to be the epic, tour de force that many of us around the world have been waiting for. More realistic than any other driving game out there, GT5 will surely reset the bar. Unfortunately this game won’t be released in the US until March 2010… but there’s still pre-order!
